The setting: Maules, a small village in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, surrounded by farmland and dense forests.

The subject: An enigmatic being, seen by many wandering the local woods over the last ten years or so, dressed only in camouflage and an obsolete mask. It's most likely a human, but we can't be sure. At two meters tall, he seems particularly interested in the surrounding flora and fauna.

Ignoring passers-by, it spends its time picking and smelling flowers; only then does it let its guard down. The crack of a twig or the rustle of a leaf and he disappears back into the foliage.

The locals call him Le Loyon, but the character calls himself Fantôme de Maules. The Phantom of Maules.

Who is Fantôme de Maules? A recluse, an outsider who has taken up residence in the forest? A survivalist preparing for the apocalypse? We'll never know, because he doesn't want us to.

And perhaps that's what makes Fantôme de Maules such a captivating mystery. The modern world is ablaze with information, and the shadows are dwindling. It's rare to meet someone who doesn't feel the need to explain himself.
