The Azalai is a caravan route through the Ténéré region of the Saharan desert, where camel caravans have been transporting salt and gold for a thousand years. Along the road stood a single acacia, the only living thing in a sea of sand. It is the most isolated tree in the world, 150 km from any other.

This acacia, known simply as the Ténéré tree, was the last surviving plant from a time when the desert was less parched than it is today, thanks to roots sinking into a pocket of water, an underground pool hidden more than 30 metres beneath the desert. It's easy to understand how the Tuareg caravaneers, themselves specialists in desert survival, held the tree and its astonishing fortitude in high esteem. Breaking its branches for firewood or letting camels eat the leaves was considered blasphemy.

This loneliest tree in the world was one of the few landmarks along the Azalai, a sacred testimony to the resilience of life, which had guided caravans for centuries. Despite this, and because it was the only obstacle for miles around, a truck driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel while intoxicated hit it in 1973 and killed it.

The fragrance is like an olfactory impression of gold, with the radiant warmth of saffron and blood orange, and lustrous, luxurious velvione musk (a material that has been described as pressing the nose against the scalp skin of a newborn baby). Gum acacia, a syrup made from acacia sap, brings a sweetness balanced by salty amber and incense. A touch of mint tea and dried fruit pays tribute to Tuareg caravaneers.
