An ancient king named Yuvanaswa had great wealth, good fortune and many wives. But he had no children, something he wanted more than anything. The holy sage Bhrigu agreed to help him prepare a magic potion for the king, and Yuvanaswa, who was a very pious man, organized a great ritual to please the gods. The ritual lasted several days and, by the end, Yuvanaswa was Sold out and very thirsty. Staggering to his feet, he came across a beautiful jug of water and drank it all. TURN OF EVENTS. The jug was the magic potion prepared by the wise men for the queen.
So, of course, the king himself became pregnant. Fortunately for Yuvanaswa, he was held in high esteem by the sacred powers. When her pregnancy came to term, the seven great sages and even the king of the gods, Indra, joined in and cut a hole in the king's thigh to give birth to the little boy. But a new problem arose: the king couldn't breastfeed his child. Indra cut off his thumb and, as he was a god, his veins were filled with life-giving nectar instead of blood. So he let the child suck his thumb and proclaimed "Mandhata", and this was the name of the new king, who would conquer the whole earth.
This is why babies, who are born with the memory of their divine ancestors, always suck their thumbs.
