Hostile Environment is the first album in over forty years from the legendary Creation Rebel, who were the band behind such classics as Dub from Creation and Starship Africa. The trio of Crucial Tony, Eskimo Fox and Magoo return with producer Adrian Sherwood to put a modern spin on their heavy dub rhythms.
This is the seventh album from the band, which originally formed as a backing band for Prince Far I, sharing the stage with the likes of The Clash, The Slits and Don Cherry. Voices by their former leader, preserved on archival tapes, feature on the new album, along with contributions from guests such as Cyrus Richards (musical director of Horace Andy and the Dub Asante Band), Italian synth maestro Gaudi and fast-talking king Daddy Freddy.
The album title refers to former British Prime Minister Theresa May's controversial policy towards asylum seekers and the recent Windrush scandal, which is all too relevant for a group of musicians of Jamaican descent who have spent their entire lives in the shadow of a former colonial power with an incredibly short memory for historical errors.
